The Best Fire Starter for a Charcoal Chimney

Can you light a full spit roast with a single 3 oz starter? You bet. Check it out.

Every year, as Labor Day approaches with the unofficial end of summer – Ohioans gather for grilling, NFL football and the time-honored tradition of the pig roast. This year, Starter King attended one such annual pig roast providing the coal, starters and charcoal chimneys for the feast.

What really turned heads, however, was just how little of the product was needed to light all that coal. No messing with chemicals, no painstaking efforts to ignite the coal – just light and go. Boom, baby. More time to enjoy the company of friends and family.

Check out our video from the event where we light the entire spit with just one 3oz brick of a Starter King fire starter:

Why use a charcoal chimney?

Charcoal Chimneys are a game changer. Though the basic concept has been around for centuries, widespread adoption of the modern device we know and love really took off in the 1960s and 1970s; the charcoal chimney (very much like the one on our store) was invented by seasoned pitmasters in Mississippi in response to concerns about lighter fluids, safety and time management/hassle of lighting coals. The design is incredibly simple - but that’s the key! The cylindrical shape promotes upward airflow, which is crucial for even lighting.

Thanks to this design, the charcoal chimney can reach incredibly high temps (up to 1,100+ degrees) which is ideal for searing all kinds of meats without breaking the bank on expensive equipment or lighter fluids.

Many Uses for a Charcoal Chimney

Beyond the standard grilling fare, there's so much you can do. Ever thought about roasting peppers in your backyard for that homemade hot sauce? (we have… and did just that). A charcoal chimney gives you that perfectly charred flavor. As we've just demonstrated, from pig roasts  to marshmallow toasts, weekend BBQs, pizza nights, and so much more - this tool just works.

Safety Tips: How to use a charcoal chimney safely.

I know everyone says “safety first,” but seriously – safety first. This is always true when you’re playing with fire. Using welding gloves (or a flame-resistant material) is a must when handling a lit charcoal chimney. What you’re looking for is the briquettes to be covered with a thin layer of white ash (this is when they are the optimal temperature for most grilling). And importantly, the chimney will remain extremely hot for a significant amount of time, and it's a burn hazard, so be sure to set it aside to cool in a safe place.

Why Starter King Starters are the Best Charcoal Starters on the Market

As you saw from our Pig Roast video, a single brick is all it takes. The very property that makes our high-end wax paper non-recyclable – a premium, low oil content wax – is the golden ticket. A mere quarter of a Starter King brick is enough to set a charcoal chimney ablaze efficiently. Within 15-20 minutes, the whole spit was ready to go – ready to roast that pig.

This is the essence of Starter King: our product lights swiftly, burns consistently, and leaves no trace behind except lit coals or a roaring fire, so you can spend more time focused on food, football and friends.
